The Diamond Fire GL 5000 accelerator is an AGP solution that combines a hardware geometry engine with an advanced rendering controller. The accelerator also offers advanced memory architecture to balance the 3D graphics pipeline and provide optimum performance on Intel-based workstations. The Diamond Fire GL 5000 combines an IMPAC-GE geometry engine from Mitsubishi with software drivers and optimised microcode developed by Diamond’s professional graphics business unit. The resulting system delivers 3D performance that scales with the power of the host CPU. It features support for the OpenGL and Direct3D APIs, and improved performance in professional graphics, animation, simulation, visualisation, industrial design and CAD/CAM/CAE applications. The 3D graphics pipeline is comprised of scene generation, geometry and renering functions. In Intel-based platforms the host CPU handled scene generation, lighting and transformation while the graphics accelerator has performed the set-up and rendering of an image.
